## Summary

The procurement process involves the Defra Network eTendering Portal seeking suppliers for the "Contract for the Provision of SCF0218 (GrasTech)" project, which is focused on research laboratory services aimed at developing grazing strategies and sensor systems to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from grazing cattle. Located in Glasgow, Scotland, this contract is currently at the Award stage, with an awarded value of £125,000. The contract period runs from 1st October 2019 to 30th September 2022, and it was published on 9th April 2020. The procurement method employed is an open procedure, above threshold, with the tender period having concluded on 1st September 2019.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in precision livestock farming technologies and research laboratory services. Companies specialising in sustainable agricultural practices, environmental monitoring, and sensor technology would be ideally positioned to leverage this contract for business growth. The emphasis on environmentally friendly and innovative solutions in livestock management aligns with current market trends, making this an attractive opportunity for skilled suppliers dedicated to enhancing agricultural sustainability.

## Notice

Cattle farmers are facing increased demand for pasture-based and environmentally friendly products. Although feeding strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been studied intensively, options for grazing systems are under-researched. The overall objective of the wider European project is to develop grazing strategies and sensor systems to reduce GHG emission intensity from grazing cattle. Greenhouse gas emissions from grazing cattle are generally higher and more variable than those from housed cattle because of the inherent variability of herbage and the reduced opportunity to monitor and manage diets. A range of imaging and sensing technologies are being used increasingly to monitor and manage resources in a wide range of farming systems. In the livestock sector, it has been easier to implement these 'precision livestock farming' (PLF) technologies with housed animals. The same technical constraints have also meant that there are no simple and reliable ways to estimate methane emissions from grazing cattle. UK work within the wider project will address development of PLF technology for use with grazing cattle.
