## Summary

The procurement process involves Newcastle University, which has issued a tender for the supply and installation of a Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) System with MS/MS Capability. This contract falls under the category of laboratory, optical, and precision equipment, with a total value of £500,000. The procurement method utilised is classified as "Other," and the tender period concluded on 3rd June 2021. The contract is scheduled to commence on 28th June 2021 and will last until 28th June 2022, with delivery expected in England, UK.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in the provision of advanced laboratory equipment, particularly those specialising in mass spectrometry instruments. SMEs with capabilities in high-precision scientific equipment and services would be well-placed to compete for this lucrative contract. Companies looking to expand their market share in the life sciences or laboratory analysis sectors should consider engaging with Newcastle University, as the in-depth analysis and high sensitivity required for proteomics and metabolomics applications make this an attractive project for innovative suppliers.

## Notice

Mass spectrometry-based proteomics has been extensively used in the field of cell biology and immunology, allowing the quantification of thousands of proteins as well as their modifications, localization, and dynamics for understanding cellular functions and processes on molecular level. Proteomics often provides a hypothesis-free and systems-wide characterisation of cellular or organellar proteomes. A standard proteomics workflow includes the following steps: extraction of proteins from cells or tissue, protein digestion by a protease into peptides, separation of peptides by liquid chromatography with online analysis of peptides by tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), database-search for protein identification and software based quantification of the peptide ion intensities. This instrument will be for a successful mass spectrometry facility. We have in recent years successfully applied proteomics to a wide range of biological questions. We have analysed complex mammalian proteomes and sub-proteomes. Many of the samples are often only available in very small sample amounts and thus we require high sensitivity for our proteomics analyses. Moreover, we will use the tendered instrument for small molecule and metabolome analyses, requiring high resolution.
