A project is underway for review and minor update to the gallery in 2023. Maintenance upgrades are planned, including lighting upgrades (as per this tender), interpretation updates and accessibility improvements. In terms of content, the main changes will be made to the graphics, interpretation panels and object labels. The layout of the gallery will remain the same, with objects both within cases and on open display remaining in situ. The current lighting has been in place since the last gallery update in 1993 and has only been maintained. As light fixtures and fittings have become obsolete or stopped working these have been allowed to go out of service and so light levels in the gallery have become increasingly low and inconsistent. There are also large windows across the north wall of the gallery, with higher level frosted windows to the north and south so the natural light levels vary significantly throughout the day and with the seasons.
