## Summary

The procurement process involves the continuation of the Gill Net Acoustic Monitoring Project, initiated by the Defra Network eTendering Portal, located in London, England. This project, classified under the research services industry category, is at the award stage as of 1 March 2019, following a procurement method identified as a direct single tender action below the threshold. The total value of the contract awarded is £59,920, with the contract period set from 22 February 2019 to 31 December 2020. Key milestones include the end of the tender period on 22 January 2019 and the contract commencement on 22 February 2019.

This tender provides significant opportunities for businesses focused on research services, particularly in marine biology and environmental science, as it aims to address bycatch issues in UK waters. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) would be ideally suited to compete for this contract, especially those capable of conducting sophisticated studies on marine life interactions with fishing nets. Engaging in this research could enhance one's portfolio and lead to further contracts within the public sector dedicated to environmental sustainability and wildlife conservation.

## Notice

This study will continue to investigate porpoise movements around static nets. It will seek to answer questions, including: is there independent evidence that they can detect nets (i.e. deliberate avoidance); how often do they come very close to nets; are they feeding on or near nets; and does the presence other species (dolphins) affect the way they behave? This will enhance our understanding to the causes of bycatch and will help in the development of effective bycatch mitigation measures. Reducing bycatch in UK waters is an Ministerial priority and has been publicly committed to on several occasions in recent months. Additional information: Please note that Defra procurement uses an E-tendering system for Procurement activities. This is currently provided by Bravo Solutions.
