## Summary

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) has awarded a contract titled "CEFAS24-114 Contract for carbon analysis (including Thermogravimetric analysis)” to the University of St Andrews. The contract encompasses services in the analysis services industry category and involves examining 455 sediment core samples collected from the Farnes and Celtic Sea areas. The procurement process utilised a direct procurement method, specifically a single tender action below the threshold, and is currently complete. The contract period commenced on 17th September 2024 and will end on 31st October 2024, with the primary location for analysis being Scotland, United Kingdom. Key deliverables include analyses of Total Carbon, Total Nitrogen, Organic Carbon, Stable Isotopes, and additional thermogravimetric and organic carbon assessments.

This procurement presents substantial opportunities for businesses specialising in marine and environmental sciences, particularly those with expertise in sediment analysis and ecosystem service assessments. Companies possessing advanced capabilities in carbon measurement and sediment analysis technology could gain significant benefits from such projects. Despite the contract's specific allocation to the University of St Andrews, other firms in the field may find similar future opportunities in public tenders that align with their specialised services in marine ecosystem research, environmental monitoring, and data analysis. This underscores a broader demand for expert analysis services within environmental and marine science sectors.

## Notice

Background: The marine Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment (m-NCEA) programme, in collaboration with Defra and the JNCC aims to contribute to improved understanding of ecosystem services provided by seabed habitat assets, including providing evidence on the effectiveness of fisheries management measures and natural capital condition monitoring, by taking sediment samples along a chronic trawling gradient in Farnes area. Ecosystem services provided by the seabed includes climate regulation, which is linked to carbon storage and sequestration. The ability of sediments to store carbon depends on several interlinked factors including the condition of the carbon, so several different carbon measurements are needed to provide an overall picture of the function and condition of carbon within the sediments. As part of this programme, sediment samples were collected using a NIOZ core during surveys in the North and Celtic Seas onboard the RV Cefas Endeavour. 455 samples were collected in total. Requirement: Cefas require the Supplier to analyse 455 freeze dried sediment core slice samples from Farnes and Celtic Sea as per below Deliverables. Cefas require the data to be provided in an appropriate format (industry standard Excel spreadsheet). Deliverables: Following analysis completed on all samples: (TC) Total Carbon (TN) Total Nitrogen (OC) Organic Carbon Stable Isotopes (TGA) Thermogravimetric analysis Soli-Toc Total Organic Carbon Analysis
