## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is seeking suppliers for the "ExCALIBUR Fusion Modelling System FM-WP4 Code Structure and Coordination: Software Support Procurement" project, which is critical for enhancing simulation codes in light of evolving supercomputer architectures. The procurement process is currently active and follows an open procedure method. The tender was published on 13 May 2022, and responses are due by 17 June 2022. The contract is expected to commence on 18 June 2022 and last until 19 June 2022. The procurement falls within the software package and information systems industry, with a total estimated value of £135,000, offering delivery addresses across various locations including the United Kingdom and Europe.

This procurement presents significant opportunities for growth, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that specialise in software development and experimental services. Businesses with expertise in redesigning simulation codes for advanced computing systems would be well-suited to compete for this contract. The focus on future-proofing simulation capabilities not only aligns with technological advancements but also ensures that offered solutions can effectively utilise next-generation supercomputers, making it a promising area for companies looking to innovate and expand their market presence.

## Notice

Radical changes to supercomputer architectures are on the horizon. The current simulation codes, that much of UK science relies upon, are designed for current supercomputer architectures. These codes will, at best, not be able to fully exploit the power that the supercomputers of the mid-2020s will deliver; at worst, they will run slower on those machines than they do now. Future computers will be more energy efficient and so the longer we rely upon the current approach, the more expensive the solution will be. Therefore, it is essential that we invest now in redesigning those simulation codes so that they perform well on the future generations of supercomputers.
