## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority has recently awarded the contract for the ExCALIBUR Fusion Modelling System FM-WP2 Plasma multiphysics model project. This procurement, part of the software package and information systems industry category, aimed to redesign simulation codes to exploit future supercomputer architectures more efficiently. The procurement method was an open procedure, with a tender deadline of June 17, 2022, and a contract period starting on June 18, 2022. The buying organisation was the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority based at Culham Science Centre, Abingdon, ENG.

This tender presents opportunities for businesses specializing in software development, experimental development services, and research and development. The contract, with a value of £189,000, is suited for SMEs and requires expertise in adapting simulation codes for future supercomputers. Businesses located in the United Kingdom and other specified regions can participate, benefiting from the potential growth and innovation this project offers in the evolving supercomputer industry.

## Notice

Radical changes to supercomputer architectures are on the horizon. The current simulation codes, that much of UK science relies upon, are designed for current supercomputer architectures. These codes will, at best, not be able to fully exploit the power that the supercomputers of the mid-2020s will deliver; at worst, they will run slower on those machines than they do now. Future computers will be more energy efficient and so the longer we rely upon the current approach, the more expensive the solution will be. Therefore, it is essential that we invest now in redesigning those simulation codes so that they perform well on the future generations of supercomputers.
