## Summary

St George the Martyr Church, located in Queen Square, WC1N 3AH, is seeking an architect-led, multidisciplinary design team for the restoration and renewal of their historic Grade II* listed church. This procurement falls under the Architectural, Construction, Engineering, and Inspection Services category, with the CPV code 71000000. As part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund supported project, the church aims to tackle urgent conservation efforts while reimagining the building's role for contemporary use. The procurement method for this open tender is an open procedure (below threshold) with a tender submission deadline on 31st October 2025 and the contract period running from 12th December 2025 to 21st February 2030. The project is currently at the Tender stage, offering a significant opportunity for capable design teams.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for business growth, particularly for architect-led multidisciplinary teams specialised in historic building conservation. The project encompasses a wide range of works, including structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as specialisations in accessibility, lighting, acoustics, and more. Suitable candidates include small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with expertise in these areas and the ability to collaborate closely with the Parochial Church Council (PCC) throughout the project phases. Given the historic significance and complex nature of the works, businesses with strong portfolios in adaptive reuse and architectural restoration are especially well-suited to compete for this contract.

## Notice

St George the Martyr, Queen Square, WC1N 3AH is seeking an architect-led, multidisciplinary design team for the restoration and renewal of our historic Grade II* listed church. This commission forms part of a major National Lottery Heritage Fund supported capital project aimed at safeguarding the future of this beautiful Grade II* listed building. Located in the heart of London's Knowledge Quarter, St George the Martyr stands as a peaceful sanctuary amid the bustle of the city. Designed in 1706 and enhanced under the supervision of Nicholas Hawksmoor, with major 19th-century works by Samuel Sanders Teulon, the church has long served the Bloomsbury community and beyond. Today, it remains rooted in its local neighbourhood while embracing a mission to welcome all who live, work, study or pass through the area. Despite its active ministry and community engagement, the building is currently on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register following the partial collapse of its historically important Hawksmoor ceiling in 2018. This exciting capital project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to restore that ceiling and address wider repairs to the historic fabric, while reimagining the church's role for a diverse and evolving city. Alongside the urgent conservation work, the church plans to transform underused interior spaces, improve accessibility and environmental sustainability, and develop new facilities to support both community and commercial use. St George the Martyr now invites architect-led, multidisciplinary teams to help bring this vision to life. The appointed team will work closely with the Parochial Church Council (PCC) through both the development and delivery phases (RIBA Stages 1-7). The architect will act as Lead Consultant and Principal Designer, coordinating sub-consultants as needed, including structural and M&E engineers, access and fire consultants, acoustic and lighting specialists, and other relevant disciplines. The team will also help advise and procure site surveys during the development phase.
