Care Navigation is NOT a clinical decision. This should be clear to both practice staff and patients. Care Navigation aims to create a sustainable, proactive and integrated health and social care system that puts the patient at the centre of their care. It must be flexible to meet the needs of local populations; there is no 'one size fits all' approach. The programme has the potential to release clinical time by relieving clinicians of additional administration and inappropriate consultations, so they can focus on managing more complex health needs. It makes more appropriate use of each team member's skills and increases job satisfaction for receptionists, who are traditionally underutilised and undervalued. Care Navigators will build relationships, problem solve, and provide a link between health, social and community resources.
