## Summary

The tender titled "Supporting Protected Seabird Populations" is issued by the Defra Network eTendering Portal, focusing on the environmental services industry. The tender is currently active and follows an open procurement method. Submissions are due by 23rd November 2021, with the contract period set to commence on 13th December 2021 and conclude by 31st March 2022. The project aims to investigate potential strategies to benefit seabird populations within the British Oversea Territories, Channel Islands, and across the UK.

This tender offers significant opportunities for businesses specialising in environmental services, particularly those with expertise in ecological assessments, biodiversity management, and innovative sustainability solutions. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that can contribute to research on improving breeding conditions and food availability for seabirds would be particularly well-suited to compete. Engaging with this tender can support business growth by enabling firms to showcase their capabilities in addressing environmental challenges while contributing positively to wildlife conservation efforts.

## Notice

Background Approaches to offsetting anthropogenic impacts to seabird populations remain largely novel and untested. Offsetting may focus, for example, on improving conditions at breeding sites, by removing invasive species or creating new colonies (Furness et al. 2013). Another option, to be explored in this project, is to increase food availability to improve reproductive success or survival. In order to make evidence-based decisions about the technical feasibility, likely effectiveness and ecological consequences of such measures, it is important to consider the practicalities, how to monitor any effects, the likelihood of success and wider ecological considerations relevant to such a potential project. Aim: Explore relevant questions relating to the beneficial use of otherwise discarded fish offal as a food source for breeding UK seabirds, to inform evidence-based decision-making about the technical feasibility, likely effectiveness, and ecological consequences of such a potential practice.
