Sample sizes range from sub-millimetre to 10-15 centimetres in length. The existing LS, which is 12 years old, includes an X-ray generator, a set of 6 precision rotation/position stages and a digital X-ray camera. It allows for nearly real-time data collection, as on the best scattering samples the minimal exposure time is few seconds. A new system should at least match, but preferably exceed the current instruments performance, allowing for fast, almost real-time alignment of crystals for cutting and precise orientation.
