## Summary

The Department for Education is currently engaged in a tendering process for the project titled "Balanced schools - do they make a difference to social mobility?". This initiative falls under the social work and related services industry category and aims to assess the impact of school diversity on educational and social mobility outcomes. The procurement method is an open procedure, with the tender period set to conclude on 3rd May 2019. The expected contract period will commence on 3rd June 2019 and extend until 31st March 2020, with a total estimated value of £30,000. The scope of this tender includes delivery addresses across various regions, including the United Kingdom and British Overseas Territories.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses focusing on educational research and social services, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs). Companies with experience in conducting studies on social mobility, educational diversity, and related socio-economic impacts, as well as those that can deliver analytical services, would be well-suited to compete. Engaging in this procurement could help enhance a business's profile within the education sector and contribute positively to social outcomes in the UK.

## Notice

There is research that indicates different forms of diversity help all students achieve better. But is there a tipping point for better educational achievement and higher social mobility outcomes? We know that sorting of the school population is heavily influenced by parental choice. In some cases, parents choose to send their children to independent schools. Seven per cent of the secondary school population are educated in independent schools, but we know that these children come from the upper deciles of the household income distribution. In other cases, parents purchase houses in the catchment areas of very good state-funded schools. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils at the most academically successful state schools is low. The Social Mobility Commission wants to understand the impact of social selectivity on educational attainment. We are also interested in the wider implications on young people and on society more broadly of the level of their schooling diversity. Ultimately, we are interested in the impact of social selectivity on social mobility.
