## Summary

The British Film Institute (BFI), located at 21 Stephen Street, London, has recently awarded a contract for Audio Visual Services (AVS) under an open procurement method. This contract aims to enhance the preservation and accessibility of UK audio-visual heritage, focusing on digitisation to mitigate the risks associated with obsolete tape-based storage formats. The awarded framework agreement has an anticipated duration of three years, with an option to extend by one year, and a total estimated value between £200,000 and £300,000. Key dates include the contract period, which runs from 1st October 2021 to 30th September 2024, and the tender submission deadline, which was on 15th June 2021.

This tender creates significant opportunities for businesses involved in motion picture and video services, particularly those capable of large-scale digitisation projects. Companies that specialise in media preservation, digital conversion, and associated services, such as metadata generation, are well-suited to compete. With the BFI's commitment to uplifting audio-visual content through commercial collaboration, SMEs and other innovative firms in this sector can leverage their expertise to engage in a growing market focused on preserving cultural heritage.

## Notice

The BFI and its strategic partners are responsible for the preservation and public accessibility of a significant share of UK audio visual heritage. It is universally accepted that content essentially 'locked' within obsolete tape-based audio and video recording systems are increasingly at risk due to the proprietary and commercially unsupported nature of the products used to create them over a period spanning many decades. While the BFI and its partners maintain considerable expertise and machinery to support and preserve these formats through digitisation, it is clear that greater capacity through commercial provision will be required to facilitate an accelerated programme of large-scale digitisation for video and audio content to provide suitable digital file formats and associated metadata for long-term preservation. The number of participants to the framework agreement is envisaged to be between 3 and 6 and the duration of the framework agreement is 3 years with an option to extend for a further one year. The estimated value for the duration of the framework agreement is between PS200,000-PS300,000.
