## Summary

The procurement process involves Highways England, which is seeking to enhance customer experience on the strategic road network through a project titled "Ride quality initiatives to improve customer experience". The initiative falls under the research and development services industry category and is located in the South East of England. This procurement is currently in the Award stage, having been finalised on 6th January 2022, with the contract value set at £259,776.46. The contract period spans from 6th January 2022 to 31st March 2023, following a selective procurement method involving a call-off from a framework agreement.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for businesses focused on road maintenance and quality improvement services. Companies that specialise in providing consultancy services or developing innovative technologies for road infrastructure would be particularly well-suited to compete. Furthermore, with National Highways committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, suppliers that can demonstrate sustainability practices or contribute to eco-friendly projects may find additional competitive advantages in this procurement process.

## Notice

National Highways (NH) are committed to continually improving the experience that our customers experience on the strategic road network. One priority targeted in Road Investment Strategy 2: 2020-2025 is a "maintenance approach that will focus on safety and surface condition to enhance the quality of journeys". This project is being commissioned to partly address the surface condition aspects and the ride quality that road users experience. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the progression to better ride quality will result in smoother pavement surfaces overall, and this presents a secondary, but equally important, opportunity related to National Highways' zero carbon plans . Smoother road pavements yielded through ride quality improvements should offer lower rolling resistance to transiting vehicles, and therefore reduce their fuel consumption (or increase the range of electric vehicles). This presents an opportunity to mitigate some of the 'road user emissions' that feature prominently in our carbon baseline, that need to reach net zero by 2050.
