The Authority is responsible for the maintenance of all publicly maintainable highways and roads that do not fall within the remit of Highways England (motorways and trunk roads). This responsibility is divided between seven highways area offices, a private contractor, as well as several smaller farmer contractors, who help provide an essential service in areas that are often not accessible to larger vehicles and equipment. The Authority is seeking to put in place an arrangement to procure winter equipment in advance of the next winter season to ensure the Authority has the appropriate equipment in time in order to undertake critical repairs and maintenance of the County's roads and highways, therefore maintaining services and minimising risk and disruption to North Yorkshire residents.
