## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has completed a procurement process titled "Fusion Futures: Uncertainty Quantification for Plasma Control Systems" in the industry category of software programming and consultancy services. This initiative, valued at £149,236.06, aims to enhance real-time plasma control frameworks with advanced uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods to improve resilience. The awarded contract started on 21 October 2024 and will continue until 31 March 2025. The procurement was conducted through an open procedure, with a tender period ending on 23 September 2024. This project will be executed across diverse locations, including the British Overseas Territories, Channel Islands, Europe, Isle of Man, and the United Kingdom, under the guidance of key contact Charlotte Byrne from the UKAEA.

This procurement presents significant business growth opportunities, particularly for UK-based organisations with expertise in software integration and technical consultancy services. The project requires highly knowledgeable staff in uncertainty quantification theory and techniques to collaborate closely with the UK's research and development teams. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are highly encouraged to compete, given the reserved procurement for UK organisations. Companies well-versed in handling software projects that need adaptive and robust solutions can leverage this tender to expand their service portfolios and enter the niche market of advanced control systems for plasma technology.

## Notice

The project objective is to extend real-time plasma control frameworks with uncertainty quantification (UQ) to increase resilience. Plasma control systems must operate reliably. They have tight real-time performance constraints and must work across a range of parameter space in which adapting effectively to the response of the highly non-linear plasma is critical. Modern approaches to control problems recognize the importance of quantifying uncertainty and applying systematic treatment to optimise results. The project seeks to apply state of the art thinking from the field of uncertainty quantification to build new capabilities in plasma control software frameworks. In general, there is scope to make control systems more resilient and to better characterize and control operational risks by applying UQ methods in plasma control system. Example objectives could include studies of the variable performance of control systems as a function of actuator response variability, either static, or time varying (the latter including short term and long term drift). Approaches could be first principles based on parametric knowledge of behaviours from models, and/or empirical inferring statistical variability from data. Another direction of interest is applying UQ to control of systems with uncertain dynamics and building robust solutions even in the absence of detailed models. UKAEA require the provision of staff with strong knowledge and experience of the theory and techniques in modern uncertainty quantification to work in close cooperation with UKAEA research and development staff for a period running from contract award until March 31 2025. Reserved Procurement (UK only) In line with Procurement Policy Note 11/20, UKAEA is reserving the right to participate in this procurement to organisations who are based within the UK.
