## Summary

The procurement process concerns Newcastle University, which has issued a tender for the "Supply and Installation of a Very High Cycle Fatigue Test Machine" as part of its partnership in the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network. This project, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, aims to enhance their research capabilities in the field of material fatigue testing. The procurement is classified under "Instruments for checking physical characteristics" and falls within the goods category, with a total contract value of £150,000. The tender period concluded on 20th December 2019, with the contract officially starting on 11th February 2020 and set to end on 31st March 2020.

This opportunity could foster significant growth for businesses specialising in scientific and testing equipment, especially those that can provide robust support and maintenance services. Enterprises that focus on high-precision instrumentation and have experience in fulfilling academic or research institution requirements would be particularly well-suited to compete. The contract also encourages SMEs to engage, further promoting innovation in the supply of specialised testing machinery to support the advanced research projects at Newcastle University.

## Notice

Newcastle University is a partner of the Joint Rolling Stock Centre of Excellence which will form part of the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN), funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). As part of this project, Newcastle University wishes to tender for a very high cycle fatigue test machine that is capable of operating at a significantly higher frequency and would be capable of reaching 10(power10) cycles in under 6 days. Such equipment would allow Newcastle University to meet the increasing demand for fatigue data in the 10 (power 8) to 10 (power 10) cycle range. Furthermore, the test machine would allow screening tests up to 10 (power 7) cycles to be completed in a matter of weeks rather than months which would aid the downselection of candidate steels for research and development projects. The test machine could also be used to support student research activities in a range of different fields. The scope of this contract is for the supply, delivery and installation of the equipment detailed in the Invitation to Tender document to the University, with after-sales support and 12 months warranty and maintenance
