## Summary

Historic England has awarded a contract for the 'Invitation to Tender for Willersey Evaluation' to Cotswold Archaeology. This project involves an exploration, through targeted excavation, of two Roman cavalry swords discovered near Broadway in Gloucestershire, within a complex of buried archaeological remains. The procurement, classified under 'Archaeological services', falls into the services industry category. The procurement method used was an open procedure, and the process is now in the award stage. The contract period is from 28th November 2024 to 30th April 2026, and the award value of the contract is £57,460. This project is essential for understanding and preserving historical artefacts in the specified region, aligning with Historic England's commitment to cultural heritage conservation.

This tender provides substantial business growth opportunities, particularly for businesses specialising in archaeological services, geophysical and topographical surveys, and excavation work at archaeological sites. Organisations with expertise in these areas, especially those with a strong local presence and connections to community groups, would be well-suited to collaborate on this project. The requirement for proximity to the site underscores the need for efficient management of finds and ecofacts, contributing to environmental targets. This contract has a considerable potential for businesses to showcase their expertise, expand their service portfolio, and engage in high-profile archaeological work. SMEs and voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSEs) are particularly encouraged to engage with this project.

## Notice

Historic England are looking for a partner to explore (through targeted excavation) the context of two Roman cavalry swords discovered during a metal detecting rally near Broadway in Gloucestershire. Historic England geophysical survey showed the find spot sits within a complex of buried archaeological remains including later prehistoric or Roman settlement. Though the find is public knowledge, reference to the exact location in outreach material should be avoided until after the site has been assessed, and statutory protection afforded if justified. We wish to collaborate with an experienced archaeological services organisation who will provide site staff, an excavation co-director, finds and environmental processing expertise, and a digital recording system in use or in development. They should be based as near the site as possible, with demonstrable knowledge of the local archaeological landscape and preferably also connections/experience with local community groups. Proximity to the sight is crucial for Net Zero targets, and to enable safe and efficient transfer of finds/ecofacts/samples to storage on a regular basis
