## Summary

The public procurement contracting process for the "Pont Ends River Restoration: Detailed Design" project has been completed by the Environment Agency, headquartered in London, United Kingdom. This project, focused on improving the environmental conditions of the Pont and Blyth Rivers in North East England, was classified under environmental services with the CPV code 90700000. The tender process utilised a selective procurement method via call-off from a framework agreement, and the contract was awarded to Fishtek Consulting. The key dates for this procurement included the tender period ending on 24 September 2025 and the contract period starting on 27 October 2025, with completion scheduled for 31 March 2026. The contract value was £53,004.25.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for business growth, particularly for firms specialising in environmental services or those with expertise in managing river ecosystems, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs). As the procurement was conducted through a framework agreement, businesses that align themselves with such frameworks can find advantageous positions to offer competitive bids. The project allowed for direct involvement in ecological restoration, which could enhance the bidder's portfolio and reputation in sustainable and environmentally focused contracts. This contract illustrates a structured opportunity for companies that aim to expand their footprint in public-sector environmental projects within the United Kingdom.

## Notice

The Pont and Blyth Rivers flow eastwards through south Northumberland, entering the North Sea at the town of Blyth. Both rivers have a long history of management by the Environment Agency (EA), National Rivers Authority, Northumbrian Water and the Catchment Boards resulting in significant degradation of the rivers and associated water dependent habitats across the catchments. The impact of this historical management is evident through the current Water Framework Directive (WFD) status of the waterbodies across the catchment with 14 waterbodies at moderate WFD status (of which 7 are heavily modified) and 1 at poor WFD status The Pont Ends Project aims to support an improvement in the WFD status of the Blyth from Pont to Tidal Limit waterbody (GB103022077052). This waterbody is designated as a heavily modified waterbody, currently at moderate WFD status. Historical management across the waterbody has included extensive dredging, the installation of extensive flood embankments and disconnection of the river from its floodplain through channel straightening as well as extensive land drainage. This management was primarily delivered to protect agricultural land and aid in the intensification of agriculture.
