## Summary

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking a new Peptide Synthesizer to enhance its biometrology capabilities. This tender, titled "RFQ Award - Peptide Synthesizer," falls within the laboratory, optical, and precision equipment sector. The award process is currently complete, with the contract period scheduled to last from 5th October 2020 to 5th October 2021. The procurement was conducted through a limited competition, featuring a competitive quotation below the threshold, with submissions due by 4th September 2020 in Teddington, London.

This opportunity presents significant potential for businesses specialising in laboratory equipment and automation technologies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Companies capable of providing high-purity synthesizers that facilitate programmable thermal and microwave-assisted reactions would be well-suited to engage with projects like this. The emphasis on innovation and productivity improvement positions this contract as a gateway for suppliers to demonstrate their advanced technological capabilities within the scientific community.

## Notice

The National Physical Laboratory [NPL] requires automation to facilitate the synthesis of peptides via 9-Fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS). The new Peptide Synthesizer system will replace an obsolete and slow model, that is currently producing complex crude peptide mixtures; which are severely hampering productivity in Biometrology. The new synthesizer will therefore produce high purity crude peptides, which will simplify purification and improve productivity. Due to the intrinsically challenging properties of the peptides which are typically assembled at NPL; the new synthesizer must be capable of fully programmable thermally and/or microwave assisted reactions. The synthesis of such challenging sequences via ambient temperature Fmoc SPPS is simply not feasible; and hence this attribute of the new system is absolutely required.
