## Summary

The procurement process for the project titled "Pilot Scale Contamination and Decontamination of Urban Structures" is being managed by the Defra Network eTendering Portal, based in London, England. This initiative falls under the 'Research services' industry category and is currently in the Award stage. The tender was published on 21st July 2020, with an end date for submissions on 14th August 2020. The contract period is set to begin on 14th September 2020 and conclude on 31st March 2021, with a total contract value of £46,266. The procurement method employed is an open procedure, deemed accessible for SMEs and VCSEs.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses focused on environmental management, research services, and decontamination methodologies, especially those with experience in responding to contamination incidents. Companies with capabilities in urban remediation, as well as those offering innovative solutions for radiological decontamination, would be well-positioned to compete. Involvement in such high-stakes projects can enhance a business's reputation and open doors to future contracts within the public sector, particularly in response to urban environmental challenges.

## Notice

The clean-up after a large, uncontrolled release of radioactive caesium (e.g. caesium-137) in an urban environment is an inherently complex process, as was the case with the Chernobyl and Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power station accidents in 1986 and 2011, respectively. These incidents highlighted the lack of effective methods for performing wide area clean-up of an urban environment. It is expected that similar challenges would also be encountered following a radiological terrorism incident in a major city. In an effort to resolve these uncertainties, this project aims to better understand the pilot scale contamination and decontamination characteristics of caesium-137 on two urban structures, bitmac and concrete. These materials are ubiquitous in the built environment and would likely form a major source of contamination following a radiological terrorism incident. The work proposed in the project will help inform the selection of appropriate decontamination methodologies during incident recovery and will provide a framework for establishing remediation strategies in future policy development.
