## Summary

The Ministry of Justice, based in London, is planning to procure respiratory protection equipment under the goods category, specifically designed to ensure the safety of prison officers during emergencies such as cell fires. The procurement is at the planning stage, with key details indicating that a notice will be issued on 5th July 2021 to explore potential suppliers in this market. The primary industry classification is protective and safety clothing, with a focus on breathing apparatus for firefighting purposes. This initiative highlights a national requirement for public sector prisons across the UK.

This tender presents valuable opportunities for businesses specialising in safety equipment, particularly those involved in manufacturing or supplying protective gear for emergency services. Companies that focus on personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety clothing, as well as those experienced in working with public sector contracts, would be well-suited to compete for this contract. Engaging in this procurement process can facilitate business growth by tapping into the ongoing demand for high-quality safety solutions within the correctional industry.

## Notice

We currently use respiratory protection equipment on prison wings to provide breathable oxygen for prison officers to enable them to deal with cell fires and rescue prisoners from them. Officers wear this equipment whenever they tackle a cell fire either by entering a cell or by inundating the cell from its doorway. Their use is to enable officers to protect their own health and safety and that of the affected prisoners under the duty of care that we provide to them. The purpose of this notice is to ascertain the number of potential suppliers in the marketplace.
