## Summary

The University of the West of Scotland is undertaking a tender process for the purchase of three AGATA detection capsules, essential apparatus for measuring radiation in the field of nuclear physics. This procurement, classified under the goods category, is currently in the award stage and follows a limited procurement method, with the final award made on 18th November 2020. The total contract value is £537,075, and the related delivery location is in Paisley, UK (region UKM83). The tender process has been completed with a single successful supplier, Mirion Technologies (Canberra UK) Ltd, who was technically approved as the sole provider necessary for this specific equipment.

This contract presents a significant opportunity for businesses within the scientific and technical equipment sector, particularly those specialising in radiation measurement technologies. Companies that manufacture similar scientific instruments or those with capabilities in high-quality engineering may find potential for growth by competing in future tenders for similar projects. With the University’s commitment to advancing education and research, suppliers that align with academic and research objectives may enhance their profiles and expand their market reach through participation in such procurement processes.

## Notice

The University intends to purchase three capsules of the AGATA detector, a device for gamma-ray spectroscopy in nuclear physics.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

AGATA comprises a number of detection units, each made of three HPGe detectors in semi-coaxial configuration sharing a common cryostat. Each crystal has a pyramid shape:the front-end features a section shaped like an irregular hexagon but the opposite (rear) end has still a cylindrical shape. The crystals have three slightly different shapes. Their external surface is electrically segmented into 36 parts, through 6 longitudinal segmentations and 6 transversal segmentations. Each crystal is mounted in a vacuum-tight capsule. This order is for three capsules corresponding to the three different shapes of a single triple-detector unit. The performance and manufacturing specifications are tightly defined to match the requirements of the AGATA detector and its spectroscopic performance.

### Procurement Information

The procurement falls outside the scope of application of the directive as Mirion are currently the only technically approved supplier for the AGATA project.
