## Summary

The contracting process titled "C1081 - Hydrogen and Oxygen Ecosystem" is managed by NI Water and its subsidiaries, with a focus on the energy and related services sector. Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, this procurement process is at the award stage, having been officially completed on 12th April 2021. The procurement method utilised is a selective approach, employing a negotiated procedure with prior call for competition. This initiative aimed to appoint a partner for an innovative demonstrator project that explores the potential of producing green hydrogen from treated wastewater.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for businesses in the energy sector, particularly those specializing in energy-efficiency consultancy, energy-management services, and wastewater treatment plant construction and maintenance. Companies experienced in innovative environmental solutions and those capable of integrating advanced technology to explore hydrogen production will find themselves well-suited to compete for future contracts related to this initiative, especially as NI Water anticipates further developments and investment opportunities in this area.

## Notice

Northern Ireland (NI) Water would like to run an Innovation partnership approach to appoint a Partner to explore the opportunities with treated water released from NI Water's Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTWs) and whether this could be used as a feedstock to produce green hydrogen using an electrolyser. NI Water proposes to establish an Innovation Partnership to appoint a Partner for a Demonstrator Project as part of the initial phase to: * design, build, commission, operate and maintain an at-scale demonstrator for an innovative oxygen and hydrogen ecosystem at one of NI Water's wastewater works; and * support it to run live and at scale for at least 6 months. If successful, NI Water would want the option to be able to work with the Partner to develop other facilities to support the production of hydrogen to fuel a fleet of vehicles and to optimally deploy the oxygen in its wastewater treatment processes. NI Water expects this will pave the way for a business case attracting investors in a portfolio of further electrolyser opportunities across NI Water's WWTWs and Water Treatment Works (WTW) sites.
