## Summary

The procurement process pertains to a tender issued by Scottish Natural Heritage, titled "CivTech 5 Challenge 2 - How can we use technology to estimate herbivore populations and their impacts across Scotland in a greener and more cost-effective way?" This initiative falls under the category of research and development services, specifically focusing on wildlife preservation and related IT services. The procurement method employed was an open procedure, and the process has reached the award stage, having been signed on 1st March 2021 with a contract value of £180,860. The call for this tender highlights the need for innovative solutions to enhance the sustainability of herbivore population assessments in Scotland, primarily with respect to deer counting, which is traditionally costly and environmentally taxing.

This tender provides promising opportunities for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and tech innovators in the fields of wildlife research, data collection, and IT consultancy. Businesses that focus on developing innovative software solutions or those experienced in environmental services would be particularly well-suited to compete. The CivTech initiative aims to attract diverse responses to such challenges, presenting significant potential for companies looking to engage in public sector collaborations and contribute to sustainability efforts within Scotland.

## Notice

The current preferred method of herbivore population assessment is expensive and has a high carbon footprint - we need to find greener and more cost-effective ways of collecting, collating, quality assuring and sharing the data relating to this task. Scottish Natural Heritage undertake herbivore population assessments in order to determine and manage populations. This challenge will specifically focus on deer counting. The current methods of gathering data - primarily through helicopter flights - are costly and have a high carbon footprint. Furthermore, methods of collating, quality assuring, presenting and sharing the data are also fairly costly in terms of staff time needed to ensure a high level of accuracy to generate stakeholder confidence in findings. So how can we use technology to estimate herbivore populations and their impacts across Scotland in a greener and more cost effective way? Please note: Scottish Natural Heritage will soon be changing its name to Nature Scot Please visit our website for information on CivTech and how to get involved https://www.civtechalliance.org/civtech-innovation-flow
