## Summary

The public procurement process regards the CEFAS21-86 C-19 Sequencing Services, initiated by Cefas, aimed at expanding environmental sequencing capabilities within the United Kingdom. This active tender, classified under analysis services, focuses on establishing a new wastewater sequencing facility in Exeter. The open procurement method allows for widespread participation, with a tender period concluding on 25th August 2021. Key activities include collaboration with the Environment Agency and the use of advanced sequencing equipment including Illumina NextSeq 550 systems. The contract duration extends for 180 days with potential renewals for an additional three 12-month periods.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for businesses in environmental services, particularly those specialising in laboratory analysis and wastewater management. Suppliers capable of providing cutting-edge sequencing technology or environmental monitoring services would be well-suited to compete in this space. Companies looking to engage in public-sector contracts related to environmental protection and analysis will find this an advantageous opportunity to contribute to important health and safety initiatives during a critical period.

## Notice

Cefas is expanding the government's environmental sequencing capability as part of the EMHP programme led by JBC to increase SARS-CoV-2 sequencing from wastewater and to build capacity for wider environmental monitoring in the longer term. To facilitate this expansion in sequencing, Cefas is establishing a new wastewater sequencing facility in Exeter. This facility will be equipped with two Illumina NextSeq 550 and a Beckman Coulter Biomek i7 along with other robotics and molecular biology equipment. The new sequencing facility will be co-located with the Environment Agency's (EA) new laboratories for wastewater monitoring in Exeter and will involve close working and sharing of samples with the EA. Currently the EA extract SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA from wastewater and perform qPCR and send selected samples to sequencing laboratories for genome sequencing.
