## Summary

The University of Birmingham is looking to provide clean energy business support and incubation services through a limited procurement process. The tender, titled "Clean energy business support and incubation services," falls under the category of business services and aims to foster the growth of SMEs within the clean energy sector. The contract was signed on 22nd October 2021, and the awarded value is approximately £433,333.33. This initiative is part of a broader programme aimed at driving innovation in energy and circular economies across Birmingham and the West Midlands region.

This procurement presents significant opportunities for growth, particularly for SMEs specialising in clean technology and energy solutions. Businesses that can offer innovative approaches to energy systems, market testing of new energy products, or consulting services focused on zero carbon innovations would be well-suited to engage in this tender. Additionally, companies experienced in delivering business development support or mentoring to emerging energy-focused enterprises could significantly benefit from this initiative.

## Notice

Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) is a government-sponsored innovation support organisation for energy systems, based in Birmingham and part of a network of technology and innovation centres established by Innovate UK. ESC and the University of Birmingham have closely collaborated since 2016 on a range of initiatives including the delivery of the business engagement programme ATETA, which supports the development of SMEs through access to the University and ESC expertise and facilities. Since May 2021, the University has been delivering the HSBC-supported 'Climate Innovation Platform' which aims to co-locate academic and commercial expertise to drive research through to application, and ultimately see energy and circular economy developments realised in the City of Birmingham, West Midlands region, and wider UK. Within each of 4 annual cycles of the CIP business support programme, ESC is responsible for delivering Step 3 (Business Model Master Class for 13 SMEs) and Step 4 (Business Accelerator for 5 SMEs). Step 3 is an intensive masterclass to walk businesses through a range of business models that they can exploit in terms of commercialisation of their innovation. Step 4 is effectively a business mentoring scheme whereby ESC will help businesses develop both the product and the business.

### Procurement Information

The CIP evolved from previous collaborations between the University of Birmingham and ESC and benefitted from ESC's extensive experience, such as through its West Midlands Accelerator Programme, WMAP, focused on supporting businesses to develop into the Energy Innovation Zones. To the best of our knowledge ESC is uniquely positioned to deliver the full suite of support services to clean energy businesses, including access to the ESC living laboratory, whole systems modelling, integration of zero carbon innovations, expertise in clean technology, market testing of innovative energy products, application of data science and consumer research.
