## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is planning a tender titled "H3AT enriched tungsten," which falls under the goods category and relates to the tungsten industry. This procurement process is currently in the planning stage and aims to investigate hydrogen retention and release from fusion-relevant materials. The tender is set to be published on 4th March 2022, with the work focused on enhancing safety by reducing activation issues from neutron irradiation of tungsten. The project will take place at the UKAEA’s facility located at Culham Science Centre, Abingdon, UKJ14.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for businesses engaged in materials science, particularly those specialising in tungsten and fusion research. Companies that excel in innovative material production or have expertise in handling isotopically altered substances will be well-suited to compete for this contract. By participating in this project, businesses can position themselves as key contributors to cutting-edge research in fusion technology, potentially leading to further collaborations and contracts within the burgeoning field of nuclear energy.

## Notice

UKAEA wishes to investigate hydrogen retention and release from fusion relevant materials which have been irradiated to levels representing different timeframes inside a fusion reactor. Self-ion damaged tungsten has already been investigated, but it is also highly desirable to investigate neutron damaged tungsten. This work has not been possible to date due to the activation issues after tungsten is irradiated by neutrons. This would lead to an unreasonably high dose rate to experimental staff. If isotopically altered tungsten is obtained, then the level of activation from neutron irradiation can be significantly reduced. The dose rate to UKAEA staff will therefore also be significantly reduced.
