## Summary

NHS England, supported by NHS Arden and Greater East Midlands Commissioning Support Unit (AGCSU), has awarded contracts for the provision of MR-guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (MRgLITT) to treat epileptogenic zones in adults with refractory focal epilepsy. This procurement falls within the health services category and covers two lots: North and South. The awarded contracts started in July and September 2024 with a total possible duration of 7 years, including a potential 2-year extension. The procurement process followed the open procedure under the Public Contracts Regulations 2015, focusing primarily on service quality and social value.

This tender offers significant business growth opportunities for companies specialised in healthcare services, particularly those focusing on innovative and minimally invasive epilepsy treatments. Providers with established epilepsy surgical programmes are well-suited to compete, enhancing their service portfolio and expanding into new regional markets. Successful bidders, such as The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, highlight the demand for high-quality, specialised healthcare services. Opportunities for such innovative treatments can catalyse growth through long-term contracts, fostering expertise and reputation in the medical field.

## Notice

NHS Arden and Greater East Midlands Commissioning Support Unit (AGCSU), on behalf of NHS England Specialised Commissioning (referred to as the Commissioner), invited suitably qualified and experienced providers to bid for an opportunity to provide MR-guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (MRgLITT) for treatment of epileptogenic zones for adults with refractory focal epilepsy (Lot 1: North & Lot 2: South). As a result of this procurement exercise the Commissioner has awarded contracts for these services.

### Lot Information

A. Lot 1- North

MRgLITT, also known as 'laser interstitial thermal therapy' (LITT), is a minimally invasive treatment which can be used in focal refractory epilepsy. Stereotactic neurosurgical technique is used to guide a 3mm diameter fibreoptic laser to the target area of the brain. Under continuous MRI monitoring, laser energy is applied to the target area to destroy the part of the brain causing seizure activity. It is safer than open neurosurgery as there is less risk of collateral damage to other structures in the brain. Open surgery causes damage along the operative pathway to access the part to be removed, which is mitigated by this minimally invasive approach.

The service will commence on 1st September 2024 and will run for a duration of 5 years (initial
period). The Commissioner has the option to extend for up to a further 2 years making a
possible maximum contract duration of 7 years.
