## Summary

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) initiated a tender for a joint PhD studentship with Imperial College focusing on researching the impact of the nutritional landscape on mosquito immunity, behaviour, and disease transmission. The procurement process, classified under research services, was completed through a limited award procedure without prior publication of a call for competition. The procurement aims to understand and manage mosquito-borne viral diseases and falls out of the scope of Public Contract Regulations.

This tender, currently in the award stage, presents an opportunity for businesses interested in research services related to mosquito-borne diseases. Companies with expertise in biological research, entomology, and public health are well-suited to compete for this contract. The active supplier, Imperial College Projects Ltd, won the award worth £55,318 for their involvement in the joint PhD project. Businesses looking to contribute to cutting-edge research in vector-borne diseases can find growth opportunities through collaborations with academic institutions and government bodies like Defra.

## Notice

This PhD project, with a One Health focus, looks to fill critical gaps in our knowledge of how the nutritional landscape impacts mosquito immunity, behaviour, and by extension, disease transmission risk.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

This joint PhD project, with a One Health focus, looks to fill critical gaps in our knowledge of how the nutritional landscape impacts mosquito immunity, behaviour, and by extension, disease transmission risk. The aim of this research is to conduct controlled studies to determine the direct effect of phytochemicals on pathogens in vitro and in vivo, the effect of nectar feeding on mosquito immunity, vector competence and vectorial capacity.

### Procurement Information

The Student and Academic Supervisor are affiliated with this university and therefore competition is absent for technical reasons (Regulation 32[2][b][ii]). This is a genuine research project into understanding and managing mosquito-borne viral diseases and the value of the procurement means it falls out of scope of Public Contract Regulations (PCR) 2015.
