## Summary

The Ministry of Defence has completed the award stage of a procurement process for the provision of Initial Aviation Optometry (IAO) services, specifically targeted at potential aircrew and controllers for the Royal Air Force (RAF), Royal Navy, and Army. The contract, valued at £456,000, was signed on 4th October 2024, following a competitive open procedure in line with the Public Contracts Regulations (PCR) 2015. The services will be delivered at Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved aeromedical centres, with the contractor responsible for approximately 1,000 IAO examinations annually. The winning bidder, Jacob and Joe Limited, will be providing these services at their premises in the UKF30 region, ensuring that all optometrists meet stringent clinical and professional development standards.

This tender offers substantial opportunities for growth for businesses specialising in optometry services, particularly those proficient in aviation optometry. Companies with a strong track record of compliance with industry standards and the ability to manage clinical governance effectively will find this contract highly beneficial. The requirement to handle a significant volume of examinations annually also presents opportunities for expanding service capabilities and enhancing market presence. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the necessary expertise and capacity are exceptionally well-placed to compete for similar tenders in the future, given the Ministry of Defence's interest in maintaining high standards through consistent, professional service delivery.
