The Fleming Centre, a collaborative initiative between the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT) and the Imperial College London (ICL), will be a major new contributor to the UK's vision that by 2040 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will be effectively contained, controlled, and mitigated. It will be a place of discovery, innovation and, above all, the place that drives global change, from the birthplace of antibiotics at St. Mary's Hospital, where Sir Alexander Fleming first discovered penicillin. High-profile work by the Trust and College, throughout the Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the value of university and clinical research on infection, and the application of this research in acute care. To do this effectively, the Centre will combine three major strands of activity: * world class scientific and clinical research; * on-site public engagement; and * convening power and policy work relating to behaviour change. The project is expected to be completed by Q1 2029, with an opening and 'soft launch' in Q4 2028, coinciding with the centenary of Fleming's discovery of penicillin. The anticipated build cost for the project is PS30,000,000, with a contract term of four (4) years.
