## Summary

Cumberland Council has awarded a contract for the "Provision of Cumbria Master Composter Volunteer Scheme" to Garden Organic. The contract, valued at £225,000, aims to support Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness councils in managing household waste through an effective composting programme. The project falls under the environmental services category and is in the award stage. It focuses on encouraging householders to compost their food and garden waste to reduce biodegradable waste treatment requirements. The contract was signed on 20th September 2024 and is being delivered across the UKD1 region.

This tender offers a substantial opportunity for businesses specializing in environmental services, particularly those with expertise in waste management and community engagement. The project supports the councils' objectives to enhance waste reduction, thus opening avenues for service providers to contribute to sustainable practices. It is well-suited for companies that can develop community programs and guide households in waste composting. SMEs with innovative approaches to environmental issues stand to benefit significantly from this initiative, providing them with a platform to showcase their capabilities in managing and reducing waste.

The aim of the scheme is to encourage householders to compost their food and garden waste thereby reducing the amount of biodegradable waste needing collection and treatment through the Council's waste treatment plants.
