## Summary

AHDB (Defra Network eTendering Portal) has initiated a tender for "Soil sampling & analysis for the Environmental Baselining Pilot" under the Agricultural services category. The tender aims to collaborate with a partner to carry out soil sampling and analysis on approximately 170 farms distributed across England, Wales, and Scotland. This initiative falls under the broader environmental baselining work, which targets establishing a net carbon balance by considering GHG emissions and carbon sequestration. The tender is currently in the Tender stage with a procurement method of an open procedure. Important dates include the tender submission deadline on 20th September 2024, with the contract period starting on 1st December 2024 and ending on 30th November 2025. The procurement documents are available electronically, and the project will be delivered across the UK.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in agricultural services, environmental science, and soil analysis. Companies specialising in soil sampling, carbon stock assessment, and nutrient analysis would be particularly well-suited to compete. The project has a substantial budget of £2,000,000 GBP, and the evaluation criteria are heavily weighted towards technical quality (80%) with cost considerations (20%) also playing a role. The successful partner will contribute to critical environmental research with implications for sustainable farming and carbon management, offering a potential pathway for firms to showcase their expertise and secure a long-term relationship with AHDB and the broader Defra network.

## Notice

AHDB is undertaking environmental baselining work on a network of farms comprising approximately 170 farms across GB where it aims to establish a net carbon balance, taking account of GHG emissions and carbon sequestration (above and below ground) and capture a range of metrics of relevance to evaluating natural capital and monitoring the environmental impact of different land management approaches.
For this tender, AHDB are seeking a partner to provide soil sampling and analysis services to inform the assessment of:
a) soil carbon stocks
b) soil nutrients, texture and biological indicators
on approximately 170 farms across Great Britain. The distribution of these farms is provisionally as follows; England 125, Wales 10, and Scotland 35. Soil nutrients are included, not only to inform nutrient status in terms of soil health and relate to carbon stocks but also to inform the risk of runoff when combined with LIDAR generated run-off risk maps.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

AHDB is undertaking environmental baselining work on a network of farms comprising approximately 170 farms across GB where it aims to establish a net carbon balance, taking account of GHG emissions and carbon sequestration (above and below ground) and capture a range of metrics of relevance to evaluating natural capital and monitoring the environmental impact of different land management approaches.

The suite of data collection being undertaken includes LIDAR scanning to estimate above ground carbon stocks and provide run-off risk maps, soil sampling to indicate soil carbon stocks and soil health, carbon footprinting to understand the GHG emissions for the farm, and work will also explore the potential for remote sensing technology to provide more frequent and lower cost carbon stock assessments.
This tender is focused on the following two deliverables, which will need different approaches, particularly in relation to sampling intensity and sampling depth:
a. Assessing soil organic carbon stocks on mixed farms in GB
b. Assessing soil nutrients, texture and biological indicators
