## Summary

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), specifically the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), recently completed a procurement process for a novel detector system for muon spectrometers. The contract, awarded under a limited procurement method due to technical reasons, required a single suitable supplier. The awarded supplier, Nuclear Instruments SRL, has provided a state-of-the-art system, rigorously tested at the ISIS muon source to comply with SuperMuSR requirements. The contract, signed on 3rd October 2024, has a total value of €171,188. The procurement process conformed to the rules governed by the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA) and did not involve a prior publication call for competition due to the technical specificity needed.

This procurement presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in spectrometry and detector systems, particularly those capable of delivering highly specialised and technically demanding components. It underscores the potential growth areas in advanced science and technology projects within the public sector. Companies with expertise in electronics and detector science and those who have the capability to meet stringent technical requirements would particularly benefit from competing in similar tenders. The focus on unique, innovative solutions highlights the business prospects in the niche high-tech equipment market, especially for firms that can partner with research institutions or offer proprietary technologies.

## Notice

UK Research and Innovation, Science and Technology Facility Centre had a requirement for a novel detector system for muon spectrometers. Due to technical reasons, there was only 1 suitable supplier.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

UK Research and Innovation, Science and Technology Facility Centre had a requirement for a novel detector system for muon spectrometers. The resulting system has been rigorously tested at the ISIS muon source, and proven to meet the requirements for SuperMuSR. This system is state of the art and world-unique so due to technical reasons, there was only 1 suitable supplier.

### Procurement Information

Since 2022 Nuclear Instruments and STFC have worked collaboratively, combining NI's expertise in electronics with ours in detector & muon science. The resulting system has been rigorously tested at the ISIS muon source, and proven to meet the requirements for SuperMuSR. Any items from a new supplier would require us to repeat this extensive testing using the ISIS muon beam. This is prohibitively costly in time and staff resource, entirely incommensurate with the SuperMuSR delivery timeline and near-impossible to result in either improved value or improved technological capability.
