## Summary

Diamond Light Source Ltd, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, has awarded a contract for the supply of vacuum gauges and control units for the Diamond-II accelerator upgrade. The procurement process falls under the completion stage and was conducted without prior publication of a call for competition due to technical reasons. The procurement, categorised under "goods" in the pressure gauges industry, concluded on 30th October 2024, with the contract being signed on 23rd October 2024. The total contract value is GBP 767,195. The equipment required includes Pirani gauges, Inverted Magnetron vacuum gauges, and vacuum gauge control units, compatible with the existing MKS gauge controllers.

This procurement presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in scientific instrumentation, particularly those specialising in precision gauges and control units. Large companies like MKS Instruments UK Ltd, which has been awarded the contract, are well-suited due to the technical specifications and compatibility requirements. This tender enables businesses to contribute to a major scientific installation upgrade, offering growth potential through involvement in high-profile, technically sophisticated projects. Companies possessing similar technological capabilities could explore future contract opportunities with Diamond Light Source Ltd to support their ongoing scientific endeavours.

## Notice

Located on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, Diamond Light Source (DLS) is a leading-edge facility for science, engineering and innovation. Diamond allows researchers from academia and industry to investigate the structure and behaviour of the world around us at the atomic and molecular level. To continue delivering the world-changing science that Diamond enables, the facility is being upgraded to Diamond-II, a co-ordinated programme of development that combines a major machine upgrade with new instruments and complementary improvements to optics, detectors, sample environment and delivery capabilities, and computing, as well as integrated and correlative methods. This will be transformative in speed and spatial resolution and will offer users streamlined access to enhanced instruments for life and physical sciences. Currently Diamond has a legacy installation of around 1000 Gauge sets and 500 Gauge controllers from MKS. In the Diamond-II accelerator upgrade we plan on using the legacy controllers and purchase new gauges and a few additional new controllers. Approximately numbers of new kit for Diamond-II is 370 gauge sets and 55 Gauge controllers. 1. The MKS gauge controllers which are currently integrated in the racks and control systems for Diamond are planned to be used again on Diamond II accelerators. 2. The MKS gauge controllers are not compatible with any other makers gauges in the market. 3. There are no gauge controllers in the market which are compatible with the MKS gauges. 4. It is not currently possible to buy gauges and controllers from an alternative supplier to fit with what we already have. There are no gauge controllers in the market that have a fast response trigger that can be used without fast valve controller system. The requirement is for equipment that is compatible with the existing installation: * Pirani gauges * Inverted Magnetron vacuum gauges * Vacuum gauge control units
