## Summary

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI), in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA), has awarded a contract titled "ID 5294321 - DfI - Active School Travel Programme 2024" under the industry category of safety training services. This programme aims to encourage and support more children in the UK, particularly in Northern Ireland, to regularly walk and cycle to school. The procurement process is now at the Award stage as of 23 December 2024, with the contract valued at £1,500,000. The active contract is being carried out by the supplier, SUSTRANS LIMITED, and includes a scope that involves the design, provision, and delivery of a coordinated sustainable travel programme to enhance active school commutes.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in safety training services, sustainable travel programmes, and educational initiatives centred around active lifestyles. Companies with expertise in developing and delivering training for walking and cycling skills, and those capable of creating programmes to instil a culture of active travel within schools, would find this contract particularly favourable. Such businesses can benefit from the potential growth associated with increased awareness and adoption of sustainable travel methods within the community, ultimately contributing to healthier and more active lifestyles for schoolchildren.

## Notice

DfI, in partnership with PHA, seeks to commission a new programme which will encourage and support more children to regularly walk and cycle to school. This new procurement will aim to draw together various strands of work currently undertaken by each body such as active travel programmes supporting communities and workplaces. The scope of this contract invites the design, provision and delivery of a programme of co-ordinated sustainable travel to school activities which will result in more children cycling, wheeling, scooting and walking to school more safely and more often. The programme will support schools to develop a culture of active travel within the whole school, which will be sustained after the lifetime of the programme. It will secure an increase in awareness of all participants of the benefits and challenges of travelling to and from school either as pedestrians or cyclists and support behavioural change to be more physically active throughout the day. The contract will also develop and deliver a programme of both walking and cycling skills training to increase the competence levels of all participants and better equip participants to travel to school safely by sustainable modes and provide increased opportunities for demonstrating the health and well-being benefits of active travel.
