## Summary

Queen's University Belfast embarked on an open procurement procedure to acquire a fully integrated small animal in-vivo ophthalmic retinal ocular imaging system, classified under the CPV: 33110000 (Imaging equipment for medical, dental, and veterinary use). The process aimed to source a benchtop system capable of multiple imaging modes such as fluorescein angiography, colour fundus imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and more, intended for use in the examination and analysis of mice and rats. The procurement began with a tender stage, culminating in an award on 29 November 2024, with the contract signed on 16 December 2024. Phoenix MICRON, a large US-based supplier, secured the contract, which was valued at £2,000,000, covering supply, delivery, installation, commissioning, and maintenance, and incorporated an initial warranty and maintenance period of 48 months with options for extension based on the equipment’s usable life.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for businesses involved in the manufacture and supply of advanced imaging technology, particularly those specialising in veterinary or medical imaging equipment. The awarded company, Phoenix MICRON, illustrates that large-scale and technically proficient businesses are well-suited to compete in such tenders, given the high level of technical specifications and requirements. Suppliers with expertise in integration of multimodal imaging systems, and capabilities for ongoing maintenance and support, can find lucrative opportunities in tendering for similar contracts from academic and research institutions, thereby broadening their market reach and driving business growth.
