## Summary

Queen's University of Belfast recently completed the procurement of a Thermogravimetric Analysis – Mass Spectrometry (TGA-MS) system, identified by contract number QUB/2740/25. This contract falls under the goods category within the mass spectrometer industry, classified under CPV code 38433100. The equipment procurement aimed at supporting advanced research into radiocarbon dating methodologies for archaeological artefacts. The procurement process was conducted through an open procedure and concluded with the award on 1st April 2025. The contract, valued at £1,000,000, will be executed in Belfast, UKN06 region, providing pivotal equipment for the university's research needs.

This tender presents significant business opportunities, especially for firms specialising in precision analytical instrumentation and support for scientific research. Companies experienced in manufacturing and servicing high-resolution mass spectrometry systems could benefit from engaging in similar procurement processes. The successful supplier, Particular Sciences Ltd, based in Dublin, exemplifies the opportunity for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete and secure substantial contracts that support innovative research projects. Participating in such tenders can lead to long-term relationships with academic and research institutions, fostering growth and expanding market reach.

## Notice

Queen's University of Belfast wishes to procure a Turnkey solution for a high-resolution/precision hyphenated TGA-MS system that can analyse the mass and evolved gas product changes associated with thermal decomposition of organic and inorganic samples in radiocarbon dating research and application. The proposed equipment will be used for cutting-edge research into the development of improved methodologies for the reliable and accurate dating of precious (material-limited) archaeological artefacts from museum collections. In particular, it will focus on the investigation, identification and removal of consolidant contamination sources under different heating regimes whilst run in parallel with an in-house ramped pyrolysis/pyroxidation/combustion (RP/RC) setup for separation/graphitization and dating of CO2 fractions. Critical to these experiments, where setups are run in parallel, is the need for the TGA-MS system to provide live overlapped presentation of the TGA AND MS data (i.e.
