## Summary

The University of Edinburgh has finalized a procurement process for the purchase of Magnetotelluric (MT) Equipment, classified under Laboratory, optical, and precision equipment (excluding glasses). The procurement, identified by the title "Purchase of Magnetotelluric (MT) Equipment" and tender ID "NCA31099", falls under the goods category and is located in the UKM75 region. This single-award contract was active as of 6th March 2025, with a total contract value of £326,051.80. The procurement method utilised was a limited procedure without prior publication due to technical reasons attributing exclusivity to the supplier, Phoenix Geophysics Limited, who is based in Toronto, Canada.

This tender provides a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in scientific and precision instruments, particularly those related to geophysical research and environmental monitoring. Companies offering technologically unique products that can facilitate high-performance measurements in extreme environments would be well-suited to partake in future tenders of this nature. The participation by Phoenix Geophysics Limited underscores the potential for niche technology firms to secure valuable contracts with prominent institutions such as the University of Edinburgh.

### Procurement Information

The purchase of five additional Magnetotelluric (MT) stations will allow a greater number of instruments to be used in the field at the same time, thus allowing a larger area to be studied, in less time. It is vital to the science that is undertaken by the users of the MT equipment that the frequency response of the magnetic sensors is the same across all equipment, as mixing and matching different types will introduce variations across the signal recorded. When the MT equipment is used in ice and snow environments such as those of the Antarctic the high impedance of the ice and snow makes electrical measurements hard to obtain. The existing supplier of MT equipment (Phoenix Geophysics) have a pre-amp system that uses a titanium electrode along with an electronics pack to measure these signals. They are the only supplier of these pre-amp systems.
