## Summary

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is currently in the planning stage of a procurement process for industry simulation software for fusion. The procurement falls within the services category, specifically industry-specific software development services, and is located in Abingdon, United Kingdom (UKJ14). Key dates include the availability of procurement documents from 26th March 2025, with a submission deadline of 8th April 2025. The procurement aims to engage industry in developing and demonstrating software capabilities critical for commercial fusion power plants, with project commencement slated for 28th July 2025 and completion by 27th July 2026. The total value of the contract is anticipated to be £320,000 GBP, with a maximum gross value of £384,000 GBP.

This tender presents a prime opportunity for businesses involved in software development, particularly those with expertise in industry-specific and miscellaneous software development services. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) are encouraged to participate, as the procurement process emphasises collaborative engagement to advance simulation capabilities in the fusion industry. Companies demonstrating robust software for fusion contexts and capable of filling identified capability gaps will significantly benefit from the partnership, enhancing their market position and contributing to critical advancements in fusion technology.

## Notice

The aims of this project align with the goals of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority in engaging industry to accelerate knowledge transfer and developments to solve the challenges necessary for enabling delivery of commercial fusion power plants. Specifically, the aims of this project are: - to clearly and formally communicate the main simulation challenges for Fusion to industry. - to allow software vendors to demonstrate and validate their software for use in fusion contexts. - to rigorously identify where there are capability gaps or developments needed for Fusion . - to build ongoing collaborative engagement with industry regarding development efforts to fill these capability gaps. The overall outcome aims to have improved engagement with software industry, clearly defined case studies for which to evaluate emerging software developments, improved depth and breadth in capability for fusion-relevant simulation, and confidence in utilisation of this capability in current and future fusion programmes. At tender stage, the UKAEA will define the specification of the case studies, including identification and execution of any small-scale experiments required to provide reference datasets. The case study specification will include a clear definition of the objectives, all necessary data to build and run the simulation models, such as geometry, boundary conditions, etc. and measurable outputs upon which the solution can be evaluated. The project intends to engage and work with all interested parties to demonstrate the performance of their software for the identified cases and summarise results to UKAEA. This element is market engagement only to refine the best way of approaching the exercise and get a clearer understanding of the suppliers working within this discipline. Refer to Appendix 1 - Background for further information.
