## Summary

Cardiff University has completed a tender process for the purchase of the Nanion SyncroPatch 384, an advanced piece of laboratory equipment intended to enhance the research capabilities of the Medical Discovery Institute. The procurement falls within the scientific research apparatus category and is governed by Welsh devolved regulations. The process concluded with an award on 26 March 2025, with the contract scheduled to commence on 8 April 2025 and conclude by 30 April 2025. This direct award procurement method was chosen due to specific technical requirements and the patent held by the supplier, Nanion Technologies GmbH.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses operating in the scientific instrumentation and research sectors. Companies specializing in high-precision laboratory equipment would find this contract particularly relevant, particularly those capable of integrating their solutions with existing equipment frameworks. The procurement process highlights Cardiff University's commitment to advancing its research infrastructure, making this an attractive business prospect for suppliers with compatible and innovative technology offerings. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) are encouraged to engage due to the suitability considerations mentioned.

## Notice

The Medical Discovery Institute have been allocated funding to purchase the Nanion SyncroPatch 384 to enhance their research capabilities.

### Procurement Information

MDI require 384-well automated patch-clamping with the following features: 1. Ability to patch in fluoride free solutions. This is critical as the channels we work on are affected by fluoride. 2. The ability to patch lysosomes. This is critical as we are investigating lysosomal channels and need to be able to patch them in their native membrane environment. 3. The ability to perfuse internal solutions during measurements. Critical to characterising channel function. 4. Is compatible with our existing Nanion port-a-patch and Patchliner devices to ensure consistency and allow protocols to be transferred between devices. 5. The ability to change to protocol on the fly for assay development. This equipment must adhere to the above criteria (including compatibility with existing equipment). Alternatives have been researched, however have been deemed incompatible. The only other high throughput electrophysiology system available is noted to be incompatible with MDI requirements. In addition to this, the supplier has a patent relating to the equipment, this being EP 1 775 586 81.
