## Summary

East Cambridgeshire District Council, in collaboration with Cambridgeshire County Council, is leading the public procurement process for the East Cambridgeshire District Council Bereavement Centre Electric Cremator project. The procurement, initiated as a direct award, involved the production, supply, and installation of an electric cremator and associated equipment, for a newly planned crematorium and bereavement centre at the Former Outdoor Centre in Mepal, UK. The contract, with a gross value of €970,000, was signed on 16th June 2025, with a contract period set to begin on 1st July 2025 and conclude on 11th May 2026. This procurement is classified under the goods category, specifically for cremators, and is supported by EU legal frameworks and guidelines, ensuring a high threshold for quality and compliance. The project is anticipated to align with the building programme for installation by March 2026.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for businesses specializing in construction, environmental sustainability, and funeral services. Companies that are adept at supplying and installing advanced cremation and emissions monitoring technology will find this project particularly appealing. The opportunity is geared towards small to medium enterprises, especially those based in the UK or the broader EU area, due to the need for ongoing maintenance and potential future developments related to the bereavement centre. The contracting process being a direct award emphasizes the importance of demonstrating unique capabilities and a proven track record in the field to be considered for similar opportunities in the future. Additionally, businesses that can offer innovative solutions within the building constraints specified will likely have a competitive edge.

The provision of the electric cremator needs to be within the constraints of the new building, changing the build layout at this stage is not a possibility due to cost implications for redesign work. The floor area available in the cremator hall for the cremator and the supporting equipment is 71m2. This does not include the floor area that has been allocated for the committal hall. There is also the constraint for the delivery and installation of the cremator to fit with the build programme, with an anticipated installation date of March 2026.
