## Summary

The University Of Edinburgh has awarded a contract for the purchase and installation of safety cabinets, focusing on laboratory optical and precision equipment, excluding glasses. This procurement, initiated as a tender, belongs to the goods category and is being conducted in the region of UKM75, which covers Edinburgh, United Kingdom. The contract, awarded to Laboratory Specialist Services Ltd and Laboratory Specialist Services, was signed on April 24, 2025, with an active status. The procurement process is a limited method, due to technical reasons, without prior publication of a call for competition, and is anticipated to end by July 2025.

This opportunity allows businesses in the laboratory equipment supply sector to gain substantial benefits through involvement in specialised projects such as this. Companies with expertise in laboratory safety equipment, especially those knowledgeable about complex service layouts and logistical challenges, would find fitting to compete. This procurement presents an opportunity to utilise technical skills to not only fulfil immediate requirements but also to establish long-term partnerships with institutions like the University Of Edinburgh, furthering business growth and portfolio expansion in the specialised equipment domain. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in delivering similar services may find this contract appealing due to the specific challenges and unique technical requirements that have limited competition.

### Procurement Information

The Institute for Genetics and Cancer (IGC) is comprised of different buildings linked together, with many spaces that have been refitted and refurbished over the years with a complex services layout, and between the College and Estates collectively there is insufficient knowledge of how the wider plant that feeds some of the key specialist facilities. In discussion with Contract Services and the College, there is agreement that the knowledge developed in the initial investigations stage makes LSS uniquely placed as the only suitable supplier to take on the required replacement work. As the maintenance contractor, LSS were well placed to undertake initial survey work to unpick how the cabinets are serviced and establish the best approach for replacement, which was within the remit of their existing contract. The overall scope of work has a number of technical challenges that are better served by a unified approach, and again LSS have demonstrated that they have a comprehensive understanding of those challenges and have been instrumental in proposing solutions; moreover, they have worked with the College/Estates to propose a staggered schedule of work that makes a project of this scale manageable logistically, given the budget deadline of end of July 2025, at the same time as minimising the impact on research capability.
