## Summary

The procurement process initiated by the Animal and Plant Health Agency, a central government body located in London, involved the award of a contract for a project titled "Studentship: Understanding the role of sheep & goat in pestiviruses" under the services industry category. With a direct procurement method below the threshold without competition, the contract was awarded to the University of Surrey. The procurement process reached the award stage on 1st May 2025, with the contract active from 2nd May 2025. The project will span until at least 30th September 2027 and may extend by mutual agreement, covering the delivery location within the United Kingdom.

This tender represents an opportunity for academic institutions, particularly those specialising in research and development consultancy services, to expand their expertise and influence in veterinary research, specifically in pestivirus studies affecting sheep and goats. The project not only provides a platform to explore innovative approaches in infectious disease control within multi-species farm systems but also facilitates collaboration with government entities. Such partnerships can significantly enhance visibility and credibility within the public sector, ideally suiting research-focused institutions with capabilities in epidemiology and veterinary science.

## Notice

Several newly emerged pestivirus species were introduced into cattle and pigs as well as wild ruminant populations during the last decades. These new pestiviruses are associated with abortion, still birth, health problems of offspring. Emerging pestivirus diseases frequently challenge prevention and control strategies in the swine and cattle industry. This PhD proposal will explore pestiviruses in sheep and goat in the UK and its transmission between different animal host species in a multispecies grazing farm system.
