## Summary

The procurement process for this tender was initiated by the Animal and Plant Health Agency, together with the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, both situated in London. The title of the project is "Studentship: Understanding the role of sheep & goat in pestiviruses," and it falls within the industry category of research and development consultancy services. The procurement process, which is at the award stage, involved a direct method to engage services under a below-threshold classification without competition. The University of Surrey has been awarded the contract to conduct this project, which commenced on 2 May 2025 and will continue until 30 September 2027, with a possible extension until 30 September 2028. The project location is within the United Kingdom, providing significant potential for expanding pestivirus research and control strategies.

This tender presents a unique opportunity for growth within the research sector, offering significant value for organisations capable of advancing pestivirus understanding in multispecies grazing systems. The project is particularly aligned with businesses or academic institutions involved in veterinary science, livestock health, or infectious diseases. By engaging in this initiative, the University of Surrey will contribute to addressing pestivirus-related challenges, thereby enhancing its research portfolio and expertise within this niche. The collaborative work within the UK horizon could lead to further partnerships and innovation in controlling pestivirus issues, adding substantial value to the related research fields and industries.

## Notice

Several newly emerged pestivirus species were introduced into cattle and pigs as well as wild ruminant populations during the last decades. These new pestiviruses are associated with abortion, still birth, health problems of offspring. Emerging pestivirus diseases frequently challenge prevention and control strategies in the swine and cattle industry. This PhD proposal will explore pestiviruses in sheep and goat in the UK and its transmission between different animal host species in a multispecies grazing farm system.
