## Summary

The procurement process, managed by Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, relates to the acquisition of a transcutaneous bilirubinometer machine. This falls under the medical equipment industry category. The procurement took place in Warrington, UK. The process is in the award stage, with the contract now active, having been signed on 29th April 2025. The method used for procurement was direct, specifically below the threshold without competition, reflecting the niche nature of the required equipment. This contract is scheduled to cover multiple regions across the UK, including UKC, UKD, UKE, and others, involving a total contract value of £14,040 gross.

This tender presents a strategic opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) engaged in the manufacture or supply of specialised medical equipment. Given the direct procurement method and the specific medical requirements, businesses with a focus on neonatal care products, particularly those capable of supplying innovative diagnostic tools like bilirubinometers, could significantly benefit from such contracts. Additionally, companies already serving NHS Trusts or those interested in expanding their reach across multiple regions in the UK would find this contract particularly advantageous for growth and reputation building.

## Notice

All new born infants should be examined for jaundice at every opportunity, especially in the first 72 hours of life. Parents, carers and healthcare professionals should all look for jaundice (visual inspection) in babies. When inspecting for jaundice, the healthcare professional must check the naked baby in bright and preferably natural light and examine the sclerae, gums and blanched skin in all babies. The bilirubin concentration must be measured in all babies with visible jaundice; it is not acceptable to rely on visual inspection alone. Our policy advises the use of a transcutaneous bilirubinometer (TCB) as this is suitable to estimate serum bilirubin concentration in jaundiced babies.
