## Summary

The Pirbright Institute, a public authority based in Woking, United Kingdom, has successfully completed the procurement process for acquiring a Dynamic Light Scattering machine. This machine is crucial for evaluating RNA-based vaccines for livestock as part of their studies in collaboration with the Centre for Veterinary Vaccine Innovation and Manufacturing (CVIM). The procurement was conducted through a direct method below the threshold, thus avoiding competition. The award of the contract, valued at £89,733.84, was made to Malvern Panalytical Limited, with the delivery of the goods scheduled between 1 May and 2 June 2025. The procurement falls under the "Checking and testing apparatus" industry category, aligning with the strategic goals of CVIM to enhance in-process quality control for their RNA vaccine development platform.

This tender presents growth opportunities for businesses involved in manufacturing specialised diagnostic and validation equipment, particularly those focusing on innovative solutions for pharmaceutical and veterinary sectors. Firms with expertise in precision testing equipment or those capable of customising apparatus to meet stringent in-process quality requirements are well-suited to compete in similar tenders. The collaboration between public research institutes and suppliers like Malvern Panalytical highlights a niche market for high-standard scientific equipment, offering potential for technological advancements and increased market presence for suppliers ready to meet these specialised demands.

## Notice

As a first step towards evaluating the use of RNA vaccines for livestock, the Centre for Veterinary Vaccine Innovation and Manufacturing (CVIM) collaborated to carry out a proof-of-principle study. The success of this work has led to the continued evaluation by CVIM of RNA-based vaccines for livestock. To enable this, CVIM is developing an in-house RNA platform. To facilitate the continued evaluation of RNA-based vaccines for livestock CVIM needs to develop the capacity to produce formulated mRNA vaccine candidates at a suitable scale to carry out in vivo immunogenicity studies. This platform requires stringent in-process quality control (QC). A dynamic light scattering (DLS) machine is required to check the integrity of encapsidated RNA particles prior to its use in such studies.
