## Summary

The procurement process led by the Welsh Government focused on the biological control of invasive plants for the 2024/25 period, particularly targeting Himalayan Balsam and Australian stone swampcrop. This contract falls under the industry category of environmental protection and is set in the United Kingdom, specifically addressing regional issues within Wales. The contract was awarded at the award and contract stage to Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience (CAB) International as a direct procurement method below the threshold without competition. The contract, valued at £69,000, commenced on 9th June 2025 and is expected to conclude by 31st March 2026. Key activities include mass rearing and release of biological control agents, monitoring of their populations, and assessment of climatic influences in Wales on rust fungi used in the trials. The procurement process is now complete.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in environmental services, particularly those with expertise in biocontrol and ecological assessments. Companies with a strong background in scientific research and capability in conducting environmental trials under controlled settings would be well-suited to engage with such opportunities. The awarding to a large supplier like CAB International illustrates the scale and complexity of the work involved, suggesting that businesses seeking growth could benefit by partnering with or providing niche services that support large-scale environmental projects. By participating in similar tenders, companies can expand their service offerings and establish credibility in the field of environmental protection and sustainable management.
