## Summary

The Imperial War Museums (IWM) awarded a contract for the installation of a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system at Hangar 4, located at IWM Duxford, as the next phase in their low-carbon heating strategy. This endeavour comes under the "works" procurement category, targeting the industry associated with heat pump installations, geothermal power station construction, and engineering design services. The project falls under open competition with a procurement method categorised as below threshold. The award decision was made on 29th October 2025, with contract work set to commence on 18th November 2025 and expected to conclude on 6th March 2026. The buyer, Imperial War Museums, is a public authority based in London, UK, with a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, finding a suitable partner in Finn Geotherm UK Ltd to carry out the contract.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses involved in sustainable energy solutions, particularly those with expertise in heat pump systems and HVAC installations. The focus on innovative low-carbon heating solutions aligns well with firms dedicated to energy efficiency and environmentally responsible practices. This contract not only supports IWM's strategic goals for sustainability but also showcases potential business growth for large firms, especially those capable of managing complex engineering installations and offering full service from design through to commissioning. This strategic alignment provides an excellent platform for businesses aiming to expand their portfolio in the public sector by setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible practices in heritage sites.

## Notice

Imperial War Museums (IWM) is seeking a qualified contractor to deliver the next phase of its low-carbon heating strategy at IWM Duxford. This project involves the installation of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system in Hangar 4, replacing the existing oil-fired boiler serving office areas on both the north and south sides of the hangar. Phases 1 and 2 of IWM's GSHP implementation have successfully covered Hangars 2, 3, 5, and Buildings 200 and 74. Heat energy is sourced from underground water via bored holes on-site, transferred through plate heat exchangers in Building 68, and distributed via an ambient loop. Phase 3 (the current tender) will connect to the existing ambient loop infrastructure already in place from previous phases. The scope includes detailed design development (based on a novated preliminary design), procurement, installation, and commissioning of all associated plant and equipment. A back-up electric boiler capable of meeting 100% of the heat load will also be integrated. All equipment will be housed within the designated plantroom. Access Code : 4E67D4UP37 This initiative supports IWM's broader commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate action, aiming to reduce operational costs and set a benchmark for environmentally responsible practices in heritage and public sector buildings.
